HaGvul Rothschild

Northeastern border with Holon. Balfour commercial axis, cheap old building stock, high potential for pinui-binui and access to Tel Aviv via Holon.

About the district

A residential neighborhood on the northeastern edge of Bat Yam, bordering Holon. Located in the zone where Rothschild Street and Balfour Street (the main commercial axis) intersect with the municipal boundary. The name "ha-Gvul" (literally "border") marks precisely this location at the junction of two municipalities. One of the city's oldest quarters: development from the 1950s–60s, predominantly low-rise "shikunim." Balfour was historically the main commercial boulevard of Bat Yam, running from Yitzhak Sadeh Street to the border with Jaffa/Holon; shops, cafes, and the city's old infrastructure grew up along it. The neighborhood's area is approximately 419 dunams (according to municipal division). Urban, working-class atmosphere with a strong commercial strip.

History

One of Bat Yam's oldest neighborhoods, settled in the 1950s–60s during a wave of new repatriates. Low-rise shikunim and shops along Balfour shaped the daily life of city residents. The corner of Rothschild × Balfour is historically connected to "Reuven's Camp" — a two-story building that served as a psychiatric hospital during the British Mandate and, during the War of Independence, as an advanced Haganah headquarters between Bat Yam and Jaffa. Since the 2010s, the neighborhood has actively participated in the pinui-binui program: dozens of projects at various stages of approval.
